In 2022, Niche Agriculture and Pharmaceuticals Limited (NAPL), associated with Harisharan Devgan, Chairman of the Niche group of companies, entered into a research collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur). The partnership brought together agricultural expertise and focused on exploring the potential of hemp and cannabis.
Research and Development in Hemp
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between NAPL and IIT Kanpur focused on research, development, and consultancy studies in mutual interests. A key area of the collaboration was research into the indigenous cannabis plant, hemp cultivation, and the development of new hemp cultivars in accordance with applicable regulations.
The partnership also aimed at exploring bioengineering techniques, including tissue culture, for research and development in hemp cultivation. This work could deepen scientific understanding of the plant and its potential applications.
Focus on Healthcare and Biotechnology
The collaboration extended beyond cultivation. According to the published report, the research aimed to explore the development of hemp-based treatments and formulations, particularly in healthcare research. The partnership also sought to strengthen research capabilities and encourage the exchange of academic knowledge and publications.
The MoU provided for activities including joint research, research proposals, academic material and publication exchange, lectures and consultancy studies.
Separate agreements would govern specific projects, covering deliverables, funding, intellectual property, and other arrangements.
A Research Oriented Partnership
The MoU was signed by Prof. Abhay Karandikar, then director of IIT Kanpur, and Harisharan Devgan in the presence of senior professors, researchers, and faculty members. The collaboration aimed to connect NAPL’s interests in agriculture and pharmaceuticals with IIT Kanpur’s academic and technological capabilities.
Through research in hemp cultivation, bioengineering and potential healthcare applications, the partnership sought to create a foundation for further scientific exploration in an emerging area of agricultural and pharmaceutical research.
